A Customer Story

The one sweater I reach for when I want comfort and style

A cozy hooded poncho sweater with a soft medium-weight knit, a drawstring hood, a relaxed fit that never clings, and nine colors made for effortless layering.

A woman wearing the Manon taupe poncho sweater on a porch in autumn

The Manon in taupe, the cozy layer I now reach for every day.

For a long time I dressed so as not to be noticed. A shapeless fleece, a navy cardigan, the same tired slacks. Safe, sensible, invisible. Somewhere along the way I decided that pretty knitwear was for younger women, and I quietly stopped buying it.

But on a crisp autumn morning, a baggy fleece does nothing to lift the day. What I secretly wanted was a sweater with a little softness in it, something that made me feel put together, without clinging to me or making me feel bulky. The pretty sweaters were tight or fussy. The comfortable ones were shapeless and dull. Nothing was both.

Then a friend turned up in the coziest hooded poncho sweater, a different color every time I saw her, and I could not take my eyes off it. She told me to read the letter from the sisters behind it first.

Margaret, Mary & Martha are three sisters from Aspen, Colorado, who learned their love of timeless clothing from their grandmother. The sweaters are their Poncho Sweater collection, and their letter walks through the handful of things they refused to compromise on. I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.

1A hood that frames the face, with a drawstring that stays put

Close-up of the hood and drawstring on the Camille charcoal poncho sweater

The hood is the whole sweater. We wanted it soft and generous, sitting in easy folds around the neck when it is down and keeping the wind off when it is up. The drawstring lets you decide how snug it feels, and it gives the neckline a relaxed, finished look. It is the detail that makes a simple sweater feel like an outfit.

2A medium-weight knit, chosen over thin jersey

A woman walking down an autumn street in Aspen wearing the Claire red poncho sweater

We looked at thin, cheap knits first and turned them down. They look fine on a hanger and lose their shape by the second wash. So we chose a medium-weight knit instead, warm enough for a crisp morning and light enough to wear indoors all day, finished with ribbed edges that keep the hem and openings neat.

3A poncho shape that covers the tops of the arms

A woman reaching for a shelf in the Juliette navy poncho sweater, showing how it drapes over the arms

We gave these sweaters a true poncho shape, so the knit drapes softly over the shoulders and upper arms. Nothing is pressed against you and nothing is on display that you would rather keep to yourself. You can reach, carry and move freely, and it is the thing women tell us they love most.

4A relaxed fit that skims, and never clings

We cut every poncho loose and fluid, so it falls easily over the middle and the hips instead of grabbing anywhere. And because real women come in real sizes, every color runs from S all the way to 5XL. It skims, it never grabs.

5Nothing to fasten, nothing to fuss with

No buttons, no zips, no ties that come undone. It pulls over your head in a second and looks the same at five o'clock as it did at nine. Wear it over a long-sleeve top on a cool morning, or over a simple tee indoors. It is a small thing that does a lot of work.

6Nine colors that go with what you own

Three women on a bench outside a cafe in Aspen wearing poncho sweaters in purple, charcoal and navy

From crisp white to deep black, with charcoal, taupe, navy blue, blue, red, purple and pink in between. We chose every one of them to sit beside the jeans, trousers and boots already in your closet, so the sweater earns its place from the very first day.

Why they're clearing it now

Margaret, Mary and Martha in their Aspen, Colorado studio

They priced the Poncho Sweaters at $122 when they launched. But after years of building Margaret, Mary & Martha, the three sisters are preparing for a quieter chapter and more time with family, so their remaining collections are going out at a fraction of that.

I ordered mine that evening. It arrived a few days later, and it has been the first thing I reach for on every cool morning since.

I do not usually write things like this. But I had dressed to disappear for so long, and this one cozy, easy sweater quietly gave me back the pleasure of getting dressed in the morning. If that sounds like you, I hope you get yours before it clears.
